π LISTEN LIVE: Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
Listen to the live oral arguments at the Supreme Court
Good morning!
I've busy preparing an investigative piece, which will be posted later today, on a violent radical that the anti-rights movement is now embracing as a heroβ a truly dangerous and foreboding development. This morning, however, I want to remind you that oral arguments will take place today at the Supreme Court of the United States, in the consequential case Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. (Note: This case was originally known as Kerr v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. When South Carolina DHHS Director Robert Kerr retired, he was replaced by Interim Director Eunice Medina. Hence, the name change.)

Although this case is part of Republicansβ decades-long war on Planned Parenthood, which provides affordable healthcare to low-income patients on Medicaid, this case is not about abortion.β It is about βwhether people on Medicaidβfolks who are low income, pregnant, elderly, and/or disabled, have any rights when it comes to their health care at all.β1
South Carolina, which is represented by the radical, anti-rights group Alliance Defending Freedom, is asking the Supreme Court to overrule decades of court holdings that have repeatedly confirmed that Medicaid recipients have a right to file a civil suit in order to ensure that they are able to exercise their medical rights. In other words, SCOTUS will ultimately be determining whether or not Medicaid recipients have enforceable rights. The Supreme Courtβs decision in this case will have nationwide impacts.
